What are gel nails?
Gel nails are a manicure finish that uses a soak-off gel polish cured under a UV or LED lamp. Unlike regular polish, gel hardens on contact with the lamp, creating a glass-like surface that resists chips, smudges and dullness. The result is a polished, glossy finish that holds its colour and shine for two to three weeks. Gel can be applied directly over your natural nail as an overlay for strength and shine, or built up into extensions when you want extra length or a specific shape.
What's the difference between gel nails and extensions?
Gel overlays work with the length you already have — they reinforce the natural nail and finish it in colour. Extensions add length using a tip or sculpted form, then build up the structure in gel. Both use the same family of products; the difference is whether you're enhancing the nail you have or extending it.
| Best for | Wear | |
|---|---|---|
| Acrylic extensions | Maximum strength, dramatic length | 3–4 wks, infill 2–3 wks |
| Gel extensions | Flexible, natural feel, sculpted | 2–3 wks, infill 2–3 wks |
| Soft gel extensions | Quick, lightweight, natural-feel set | 2–3 wks |
| Foam extensions | Custom fitted shapes (in-curve, almond, etc.) | 2–3 wks |
| BIAB overlay | Strengthening your natural nail, no length | 3–4 wks |
| Gel overlay | Glossy finish + protection, no length | 2–3 wks |
Which is right for you? If your natural nails are short and strong, an overlay or BIAB keeps things low-maintenance. If you want length or a specific shape, gel or acrylic extensions are the answer — gel for a lighter, flexible feel, acrylic when you want the strongest possible structure.
Short on time?
Quick fix repairs a single broken or lifted nail without redoing the whole set. Stick-on press-on sets are a polished option when you need beautiful nails for an event but no time for a full appointment.
How long do gel extensions last?
Gel extensions typically last two to three weeks before needing an infill, and a full set can be maintained for six to eight weeks with regular infill appointments. With professional application and proper aftercare, you can expect no lifting, chipping or yellowing in that window — the finish stays as clean as the day it was done.
How to care for your gel nails
- Apply cuticle oil daily to keep the nail and skin hydrated.
- Wear gloves for cleaning, gardening, and washing up.
- Avoid using your nails as tools — open packaging with your fingers, not your tips.
- Book infills every two to three weeks rather than letting lifting set in.
- Never pick or peel gel off — always have it professionally removed.
